You've almost definitely heard of dark matter, but have you heard of the woman who proved it's existence? The first evidence of dark matter was found by the astronomer Vera Rubin in the 1970s, who observed that stars at the edge of galaxies move much faster than expected. Calculations using visible mass predicted that the stars should be moving considerably slower speeds, so something else had to be causing this increase in velocity; dark matter. The phenomenon had been predicted in the 1930s by Fritz Zwicky but it wasn't until Rubin 40 years later that it was proven.

Although the beginning of our trip was not perfect, thanks to the well-timed Italian air-strike - our baggage was hostage in Pisa for about 7 hours. Our first day ended with the ultimate reunion of our bags along with the sainthood of Miss Cresswell; who had fought long and hard for our precious belongings! Our next three days was packed full with excursions including church crawls, intense Italian lessons, museum visits and many, many gelato breaks. An all-round favourite was the Gucci Museum which contained fabulous shoes, dresses and of course, refreshments in our main rendez-vous on the Piazza della Signoria.
